Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Identify the accessibility standards
   • Research and identify, specific user groups with particular accessibility requirements
   • Identify general legislated and industry accessibility standards, and requirements, to understand the wider context of accessibility
   • Identify web development standards, and prioritise application
   • Consolidate specific and general standards, and requirements, into an accessibility checklist for application to website related work
2. Test for website accessibility
   • Select and prepare, the appropriate automatic testing tools and software
   • Run the automatic testing tools and make document changes, based on the results
   • Ensure that the text equivalent for every non-text element is present in the website, where feasible
   • Verify that information conveyed with colour is also available without colour
   • Identify any changes in the natural language of a document text
   • Check and ensure, that the document can be read without style sheets
   • Check and ensure that the priorities identified in the analysis of web development standards are met and completed
   • Test the site with different user groups, to ensure that the site transforms successfully and maintains accessibility
3. Test the pages
   • Check and ensure that the pages are not dependent on colour, and can operate in a monochrome environment
   • Check and ensure that the pages are logical and accessible, in a text-only environment
   • Verify that the pages operate on a text-to-speech browser
   • Ensure that the accessibility of the website is signed off by the appropriate person, as meeting the web-development standards

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

identify accessibility standards

test a website for accessibility using a range of tools and tests

check website documents and other web components for accessibility issues

test web pages for accessibility.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify and describe the relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice, relating to access and equity

describe the computing and programming standards that apply to access and equity

describe the access and equity issues of web page design, in relation to:

customer and business liaison approaches, and processes

electronic commerce modelling language

government, advocacy group, and user group liaison

discuss the application of privacy principles to website development, user access and user usage

describe technical performance measurement principles

describe the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)

explain the importance of website accessibility, security, and equity legislation

compare website design methods and standard website structures

explain website security

explain workload metrics

list World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards.
